US President Donald Trump on Monday said that he will “substantially raise” tarišs on India for buying Russian oil and then selling it in the open market for big profits. “India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian oil, they are then, for much of the oil purchased, selling it on the open market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian war machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the tariš paid by India to the USA...,” the US President said in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.

On a day the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified that the “marginal” decrease in vehicle mileage by ethanol-blending can be minimised through engine tuning, industry experts said petrol blended with 20 per cent ethanol (E20 fuel) is decidedly corrosive and a staggering number of two- and four-wheelers would require retrofitting to minimise the damage.

Within 15 months of breaking the ground for a new manufacturing plant at the port town of Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu, Vietnam’s VinFast, on Monday, inaugurated its facility to produce electric vehicles (EVs) not only for India but also for global markets. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin inaugurated the plant in the presence of the CEO of VinFast Asia, Pham Sanh Chau, with the roll out of the premium VF7 car.


CIL looks to offer more coking coal to steel sector

Coal behemoth Coal India is looking to offer more coking coal to the country’s steel sector to tap the potential future market for coal consumption. India possesses 389.42 billion tonnes of geological coal resources, including 212 bt of proven reserves. However, most of this is noncoking coal (around 89 per cent), with limited availability of highquality coking coal, resulting in continued dependence on imports for the steel industry.


NITI Aayog bats for national EV policy with clear targets

Government think tank NITI Aayog on Monday pitched for a national EV policy with clear targets and timelines to fasttrack India’s electric mobility transition. The Aayog, titled in its report framework with phased EV mandates. It also pitched for a clear policy, with target timelines, for zeroemission vehicle (ZEV) adoption. “Create a pooled fund with contributions from the public budget and multilateral development banks for providing lowerinterest loans for the procurement of ebuses and etrucks,” the report said, and suggested designing and launching an appropriate scheme to channel funds.
